This could be called the definitive edition unless they decide to upgrade this game again, and as such it has the honor of receiving the Official Andrew WK Partyest Corpse Party Seal of Approval*. Use of the multiple save files is encouraged as there are two proper endings that can be obtained based on who all survives the trek through Heavenly Host Elementary School.Ĭorpse Party on the 3DS is an improved version of the original game and those who have been curious about Corpse Party but haven’t played it this is the version to experience it. Instead of a simple death followed by a game over screen, this gives Corpse Party an element of a Choose Your Own Adventure book, where even a bad ending can be as satisfying as the proper one. Aside from being intriguing for those with morbid curiosity, this works great as a narrative device. The 3DS version featured even more wrong endings, which personally is a strong enough selling point as that aspect is my favorite part of this title. Some other ones result in being buried alive, eaten by one of your friends, or one of my personal favorites was swallowing a pair of scissors. Some of these were predictable, like being attacked by a malevolent spirit that ends up killing the character. This made it nearly impossible for me to complete the game because unlike almost every other game I play I deliberately tried to do things incorrectly just to see what sort of horrors would befall the characters. The story of Corpse Party follows a linear path, and when the player takes an action that contradicts where the story is supposed to go something horrible happens instead.

What made this game so memorable when I first played the PC version was the various “wrong ends” that can be found. Throughout the game the characters are traveling through the ruins of a school where they encounter the spirits of those that have perished long ago. The 3DS version also features four additional chapters that focus on some of the more minor characters and addresses some plot points that were not explained in the earlier versions.Ĭorpse Party is a great game for horror fans, and a lot of this stems from how disturbing some of the scenarios presented are. The translation has been redone to help flesh out the dialog which provides some extra clarification to some plot points. This reissue would not be really justified if the only improvements were just graphics and sound but the upgrades do extend into some substantial areas as well. The portraits have been redone and they are of a high quality anime style which is a nice contrast to the retro style of the rest of the graphics. The character sprites and environments have retained their 16-bit charm but have all been smoothed over to look nicer and not as pixelated as some earlier versions. The soundtrack has been remixed for the 3DS version, and the improved quality is most noticeable with headphones where the creepy noises and distant voices are take on an even more chilling nature.

This version of Corpse Party is no different, but this does showcase that despite the original game being 20 years old they are taking steps to make it feel more modern without compromising the original experience. These introductory music videos are nice, but ultimately they are of almost no consequence to the overall quality of the game. I do miss the original opening score from the PC version but I suspect I will be in the minority here.

The music video intro is a nice addition, which does give this port a modern feel since this feature seems to be the standard way to start up a Japanese game these days, at least ones that end up in my review pile.

The most noticeable difference when we get this Corpse Party started is that we are greeted with a full motion animated video with a pop rock song with Japanese vocals. So instead of trying to minimize self plagiarism, we will discuss the changes that are in the 3DS version keeps this party going with the old review being applicable to the 3DS version except for any differences noted. Likewise, having reviewed the PC version just a few months ago, a new review of the 3DS release would be approximately 85 percent repeated material and the final score for the game (four out of five) would remain unchanged. There are a few noteworthy updates, but beyond these new upgrades it is the same game we have enjoyed before. The original Corpse Party has been reissued yet again, this time for the Nintendo 3DS.
